Marine-grade coils: the one spec that doubles your coastal AC's lifespan
On the Crystal Coast, the difference between a standard aluminum coil and a marine-grade coated coil is the difference between a 7-year unit and a 14-year unit. This is the technical deep-dive — how the coating works, when it's worth the upcharge, and how to spot the difference between a real coastal-grade install and a marketing gimmick.
The 60-second answer
On a Crystal Coast address, a factory-coated ("marine-grade" or "coastal-grade") outdoor condenser coil roughly doubles the service life of an AC or heat-pump condenser versus a standard bare-aluminum coil. Typical upcharge is $200–$800 for the coil coating alone, or $600–$1,500 for a full coastal package (coated coil + marine-grade fasteners + service-valve upgrade + corrosion-resistant contactor + elevated pad). At any oceanfront or within-3-miles address, it pays for itself once. Further inland, it becomes a cost-benefit conversation.

Definition — the corrosion mechanism
How salt air actually destroys an outdoor coil
An outdoor condenser coil is built from two different metals in intimate contact: soft aluminum fins pressed against harder copper (or copper-alloy) tubing carrying refrigerant. The fins act as heat-transfer surface area — dozens of square feet of exposed aluminum folded into a coil roughly the size of a small filing cabinet — and they are the piece that fails first on the coast.
Salt aerosol carried onshore on ocean wind deposits chloride ions all over that aluminum surface. Chloride ions do two nasty things chemically: they break down aluminum's normal protective oxide layer, and they act as an electrolyte between the aluminum fins and the copper tubes, driving galvanic corrosion. Aluminum is more electronegative than copper in the galvanic series, so the aluminum sacrificially corrodes — the fins pit, then thin, then eventually flake apart when a technician tries to comb them straight during service. Meanwhile, chloride ions accelerate rust on any exposed steel: cabinet fasteners, service-valve caps, the contactor housing, the capacitor terminals. Everything metallic loses.
Humidity is the accelerator. Salt aerosol dropped on a dry surface just sits there; salt aerosol on a moist coil surface (and Crystal Coast air is almost always moist) creates the electrolyte that lets the galvanic reaction proceed continuously. Which is why the same coil in dry desert air lasts decades and on the coast dies in years.
What "marine-grade" actually means
The three coating chemistries you'll actually see quoted
There is no legal definition of "marine-grade" HVAC — the term is industry shorthand. What actually matters is the specific coating and how it's applied. The three you'll see on real coastal quotes:
- E-coat (electro-deposited epoxy). An epoxy-based coating applied by electro-deposition — the coil is submerged and an electrical charge pulls the epoxy evenly into every capillary between fins and around tubing. Result: a very thin (usually 0.5–1.0 mil), extremely uniform coating with excellent coverage. Cured under heat. Widely used across major HVAC manufacturers' coastal packages.
- Blygold (polyurethane resin, brand-specific). A polyurethane-based coating originally developed by Blygold International for marine and refinery HVAC. Applied by pressure spray or dip. Thicker than e-coat (typically 1.0–2.0 mil), highly resistant to chemical attack, and rated for very aggressive environments. Available on Daikin coastal packages and via specialty applicators for other brands.
- Heresite (phenolic, brand-specific). A phenolic-resin baked-on coating with a very long track record in chemical-plant and coastal HVAC. Multi-coat, heat-cured, extremely durable, and correspondingly the most expensive of the three. Common on light-commercial and industrial coastal equipment; less common on residential.
For a residential coastal install, an e-coat or Blygold-style factory coating is the normal spec — Heresite is often overkill for a residence unless you're on immediate oceanfront exposure with a specific corrosion history on the previous unit. What matters more than choosing between these is that the coating is factory applied and covers the entire coil, including hard-to-reach fin gaps. A "coastal package" that's really just a field-applied spray-on the day of install is not equivalent — coverage is spotty and the coating starts wearing at year 3.
Spec to ask for: "Factory-applied polymer coil coating, full-coil coverage." If a competing contractor can't answer whether their coastal package is factory or field-applied, that's the sign you've hit a sales-gimmick "coastal package" instead of a genuine coastal spec.
When to use — Airtech's coastal-tier guidance
Distance-from-water rules of thumb
These are Airtech's field-derived tiers based on 20+ years of coastal replacements. Use the interactive salt-air corrosion checker for your specific town.
- Oceanfront / direct sound or inlet (0–1 mile from open water). Full coastal package is a hard yes. Standard coils here fail at 5–7 years. This is where wall-hang brackets, elevated pads, marine fasteners, and a factory coating all pay back — and where Airtech quotes the full package by default without waiting to be asked.
- Near-water (1–3 miles from open water, or direct large-river/sound exposure). Coated coil + marine fastener kit + service-valve upgrade is the correct spec. Elevated pad and wall-hang bracket are optional on higher-ground homes. Standard-coil units here typically fail at 8–10 years.
- Middle-coast (3–15 miles from open water, wind-exposed). Coated coil is a good value; the rest of the package is optional. This is the cost-benefit conversation tier — a homeowner planning to stay 8+ years usually says yes; a homeowner planning to sell in 3 usually skips it.
- Inland (15+ miles, minimal wind exposure). Standard equipment is fine. Airtech will quote a coastal upgrade if you ask, but we won't push it — the economics don't work.
The rest of the coastal package
Coating is the big rock — but not the only one
A coastal-grade install is a stack of decisions, not a single upcharge. The other items in the package:
- Marine-grade fastener kit. Stainless steel screws for cabinet panels, coated hardware for the coil mounts, and rust-resistant service-panel latches. Small line-item, huge difference for the technician who has to open the unit in year 8.
- Service-valve upgrade. Brass or nickel-plated Schrader valves with sealed caps instead of the standard steel versions. If a valve rusts shut, a refrigerant service call becomes a valve replacement — you're paying for the valve fix before you can do the fix you called about.
- Corrosion-resistant contactor and capacitor. The contactor is the electrical relay that switches the compressor on and off — the two most common electrical failures on a coastal condenser are contactor pitting and capacitor corrosion. Sealed / marine-rated versions cost a few dollars more per part.
- Drain-pan treatment. An anti-microbial drain pan and treatment tablet in the pan slow the algae growth that turns into a clogged condensate line on humid coastal AC systems.
- Elevated composite pad. A 6–8" composite base on coarse-stone drainage instead of a poured concrete slab. Composite doesn't chemically react with cabinet feet, and better drainage means the cabinet doesn't sit in wet fill after storms.
- Wall-hang bracket. For homes with tidal-surge exposure or crawlspace flooding history, mounting the condenser 24–36" up a corrosion-treated wall bracket keeps the coil out of splash range in a moderate coastal storm. Not needed on higher ground.
Proof — how to spot a coastal-grade install
The visible cues on your outdoor unit
You don't need to be a technician to inspect your own condenser. Four visible cues tell you whether an install is genuinely coastal-grade or a standard install with a coastal sticker on the paperwork.
- Coil color. Peek in through the top grille (or side vents) at the fin surface. A coated coil is a distinct color — usually gold, dark blue, or dark gray depending on the coating chemistry. Bare silver aluminum is a standard coil.
- Fastener color. Panel screws should be bright stainless or nickel plating. Zinc-plated or bare-steel screws show up as dark, rust-tinted, or corroded heads within a year on the coast — that's a standard-hardware install.
- Service-valve caps. Coastal units have brass or bright-nickel caps with intact seals. Corroded or missing caps are a maintenance flag on any install, but they're also a sign the original install wasn't coastal-spec'd.
- Pad and elevation. Look at what the unit sits on. Concrete slab flush with grade with debris packed underneath is the standard install. A composite pad with visible drainage stone and 6+ inches of ground clearance is the coastal spec.

Typical upcharge ranges
These are typical Crystal Coast 2026 ranges — the specific number on your quote depends on tonnage, equipment tier, and site conditions.
- Coated coil only, factory option. $200–$800 upcharge on a new install.
- Coil + marine fastener kit + service-valve upgrade. $400–$1,000.
- Full coastal package (all of the above + corrosion-resistant contactor + elevated composite pad + drain-pan treatment). $600–$1,500.
- Wall-hang bracket install (optional). $250–$600 additional labor + hardware depending on wall type and bracket rating.
Payback math on an oceanfront address: a standard uncoated unit replaced at year 7 costs the full equipment + labor over again — call that $6,000–$12,000 depending on tier. A coated unit at the same address running to year 14 defers that entire second replacement by 7 years. Any way you cash-flow it, the coating pays back.
Warranty implications
A coated coil doesn't extend the warranty — it prevents the warranty claim
One nuance worth understanding: a factory coastal coating does not, by itself, add years to the manufacturer warranty. What it does is dramatically reduce the odds of the warranty being invoked in the first place, and — more importantly — it keeps you out of the "corrosion exclusion" language that some manufacturers embed in fine print.
A rusted-out coil on an oceanfront address in year 8, on a standard uncoated unit, can sometimes be denied as "corrosion damage" — which the manufacturer treats as an environmental cause outside the warranty. A coated coil that fails at the same age is almost always a covered failure, because the coating was the exact defense the manufacturer expected you to have. This is the sneaky reason to spec the coating even on a "warranty covers it anyway" system: the coating changes whether the warranty actually pays out.

A marine-grade (or coastal-grade) coil is a standard aluminum-fin / copper-tube condenser coil where the entire coil assembly — fins, tubing joints, headers — is coated with a corrosion-resistant polymer film before the unit is assembled. Common coating chemistries include epoxy-based e-coat, polyester film, and the branded Blygold and Heresite systems, all of which function similarly: they create a continuous non-metallic barrier between the aluminum and any chloride-rich salt aerosol in the air, which is what starts the galvanic corrosion that eats standard coils on the coast.
How much does a marine-grade coil actually cost extra? +
Typical range is $200–$800 for the coil coating alone as a factory option on a new install. If you go all the way to a full coastal package — coated coil plus marine-grade fastener kit, service-valve upgrade, corrosion-resistant contactor, elevated composite pad, and wall-hang bracket — you're looking at more like $600–$1,500 in additional cost, again depending on the equipment tier and configuration. How much longer does a marine-grade coil last? +
Based on 20+ years of Airtech's coastal field data — the outdoor units we install and service between Wilmington and Washington — a standard-coil condenser at oceanfront exposure typically fails at year 5–8 from corrosion. A properly-coated coastal unit in the same environment typically runs 12–14 years. That's not exactly "doubled" in every case, but it's close, and it's why the coating economics work: you're spending an extra $200–$1,500 up front to avoid a full replacement 6–7 years earlier.
Do I need it if I'm several miles from the ocean? +
It depends on wind exposure, not just linear distance. Onshore prevailing winds carry salt aerosol miles inland — an address three miles inland with an unobstructed sea-breeze corridor sees more salt than an address one mile inland tucked behind a maritime forest. Airtech's field observations: within about 3 miles of open ocean, or with direct sound / inlet / large-river exposure, the coating pays for itself reliably. From 3 to 15 miles inland it's a cost-benefit conversation — a rinse-and-cover routine can buy most of the benefit for free. Beyond 15 miles it's usually money you don't need to spend.
Can I add coastal coating to an existing coil that's already installed? +
Yes, but the economics are worse than getting it at install time. Field-applied coatings — sprayed or brushed on an existing coil — work, but coverage is less uniform than a factory-applied coating (the fin gaps and tubing junctions are hard to reach) and the coating usually needs re-application in year 5–7. For a coil that's already partway through its life, most of the time it makes more sense to plan for a coastal-package replacement at end-of-life rather than retrofit. For a newer coil that got installed uncoated on a coastal address and the homeowner didn't know to ask, a field application is a reasonable stopgap.
How can I tell if my current outdoor unit is coastal-grade? +
Look at the coil fins from the side of the unit — pull the top-panel screws if you're comfortable, or ask a technician on a maintenance visit. A coated coil has a distinct color tint (usually gold, dark blue, or dark gray depending on the coating chemistry) versus the bare-aluminum silver of a standard coil. Second cue: check the model number against the manufacturer's coastal / coastal-package variant — Daikin, Trane, Carrier, Lennox all publish these. Third: look at the fasteners and service-valve caps. Bright stainless or nickel plating suggests a coastal kit; corroded steel screws suggest a standard install.
Does a coated coil affect efficiency or SEER2 rating? +
Very slightly — the coating adds a thin layer of thermal insulation that reduces heat-transfer efficiency by a small percentage. In practice, on new equipment tested per AHRI standards, the SEER2 impact is small enough that manufacturers publish the same rating on coated and uncoated versions of the same model. Over the equipment's life, the coated coil's real-world efficiency is actually higher, because a corroded uncoated coil loses efficiency dramatically as fins pit and airflow degrades. The coating helps you keep the day-one efficiency for longer.
