Cooling & Heat Pumps
What Is Refrigerant?
Refrigerant is the working fluid that carries heat around the system, absorbing it where it evaporates and releasing it where it condenses. It is not consumed in normal operation — a system that is low on refrigerant has a leak, and topping it up without finding that leak treats the symptom only.
Also called: coolant · freon
Why it matters to you
Refrigerant handling is federally regulated under EPA Section 608, so charge work is licensed work, not DIY. Which refrigerant your system uses also affects what a future repair looks like, as the industry transitions away from older high-GWP blends.
What to do about it
If a technician proposes adding refrigerant, ask where the leak is and how it was located. Repeated top-ups without a leak search mean the underlying fault is still there.
