What Is R-454B?

R-454B is a lower-GWP refrigerant blend adopted by most residential manufacturers for new equipment as the R-410A phase-down took effect. It is classified A2L — mildly flammable — which brings different handling, leak-detection and storage requirements than the A1 refrigerants it replaces. It is not the only A2L in use: Daikin moved its residential lines to R-32 instead.

Also called: 454B

Why it matters to you

R-454B is what most brands put in equipment built from 2025 onward, so you will see it on quotes across the market. Daikin equipment uses R-32 rather than R-454B, so which one applies depends on the brand being quoted. Neither is interchangeable with R-410A, so neither can be put into an existing system; that distinction matters when weighing a repair against a replacement.

What to do about it

Ask which refrigerant a quoted system uses and confirm the installer is equipped and trained for A2L service. The classification affects tools, leak detection and service procedure, not day-to-day operation for you.

Common questions

Does the R-410A phase-down mean I must replace my system?
No. The AIM Act phases down production and import of high-GWP refrigerants; it does not ban existing equipment or make servicing it illegal. An installed R-410A system can continue to run and be serviced. The phase-down is a factor to weigh when a major repair comes up on older equipment, not a deadline.
What does the A2L classification actually change?
A2L means mildly flammable, which changes how the refrigerant is handled, stored and leak-detected, and brings requirements for equipment design and service practice. For a homeowner, day-to-day operation is unchanged; the implications sit with the installer and the equipment's built-in safety features.
Can R-454B be put into an R-410A system?
No. The two are not interchangeable. They operate at different pressures and the equipment is designed around a specific refrigerant, including its safety classification. Converting an existing system is not a routine option.
