Cooling & Heat Pumps
What Is a Compressor?
The compressor is the pump at the centre of the refrigeration cycle. It raises the pressure and temperature of refrigerant vapour so the outdoor coil can release heat in cooling mode. It lives in the outdoor unit and is typically the single most expensive component in the system.
Also called: AC compressor
Why it matters to you
Compressor life is shortened by the conditions a coastal site creates: salt-laden air attacking the coil it depends on for heat rejection, and short cycling from an oversized system. Protecting the compressor is most of the argument for both coil maintenance and correct sizing.
What to do about it
Rinsing the outdoor coil with fresh water is homeowner-safe and genuinely useful near the water. Anything involving refrigerant, electrical components or the compressor itself is licensed work under EPA Section 608.
