What Is R-410A?
R-410A is the non-ozone-depleting HFC refrigerant blend that became the residential standard after R-22 was phased out. It is now itself being phased down under the AIM Act because of its high global warming potential, and manufacturers have moved new residential equipment to lower-GWP alternatives.

Why it matters to you
A phase-down applies to production and import of the refrigerant, not to the system in your yard. An existing R-410A system remains legal to own, run and service. What changes over time is the supply picture for the refrigerant, which is a consideration when weighing a major repair on an older system.
What to do about it
Check which refrigerant your system uses — it is on the outdoor unit's data plate. If you are deciding between a large repair and replacement on an R-410A system, ask how that factors in rather than assuming the system must be replaced.
