Cooling & Heat Pumps
What Is a R-32?
R-32 is a single-component lower-GWP refrigerant used in new air conditioners and heat pumps in place of R-410A. Like R-454B it is classified A2L — mildly flammable — but because it is a single compound rather than a blend, its composition does not shift if a system develops a leak.
Also called: R32 · difluoromethane
Why it matters to you
Daikin uses R-32 across its residential lines, so if a Daikin system is being quoted, this is the refrigerant it will contain rather than the R-454B most other brands use. It is not interchangeable with R-410A and cannot be added to an existing system.
What to do about it
Ask which refrigerant a quoted system uses and confirm the installer is trained and equipped for A2L service. A single-component refrigerant can be topped up after a leak is repaired without reclaiming the whole charge, which a blend may require; for you, day-to-day operation is the same either way.
