What Is Short Cycling?
Short cycling is when a system starts and stops in rapid succession instead of running a full cycle. Causes include oversized equipment, restricted airflow, low refrigerant charge or a control fault. Each start draws peak current and produces the most mechanical wear of any part of the cycle.
Also called: short-cycle · rapid cycling
Why it matters to you
Short cycling is the mechanism by which an oversized system fails a humid coastal house: cycles too brief to pull moisture out of the air leave it cold and clammy, while the repeated starts accumulate wear on the compressor.
What to do about it
Check the filter first, since restricted airflow is both the most common and the easiest cause to rule out. If cycles stay short with a clean filter, the cause is likely sizing, charge or controls, all of which need measurement rather than guesswork.
