What Is Manual J Load Calculation?
Manual J is the ACCA standard procedure for calculating a building's heating and cooling loads. It accounts for floor area, orientation, insulation, window type and area, air leakage, occupancy and local design temperatures, and produces the BTU/h the house actually needs — separating sensible heat from moisture (latent) load.
Also called: Manual J · load calculation · heat load calculation
Why it matters to you
The latent half of the calculation is what makes Manual J matter on the Crystal Coast. A procedure that only sized for temperature would miss how much moisture a humid coastal summer puts into the house, and would land on equipment that cools the air without drying it.
What to do about it
Ask to see the load calculation output, not just its conclusion. A credible Manual J names your design temperatures, window and insulation assumptions, and separates sensible from latent load. Equipment selection then follows Manual S, which matches real rated capacity to that load.
Common questions
- Why can't square footage alone size a system?
- Because two houses of identical size can have very different loads. Orientation, glazing area, shading, insulation levels, air tightness and duct location all move the number substantially. Rules of thumb per square foot were built for a generic house and routinely oversize modern or renovated ones.
- What is the difference between Manual J and Manual S?
- Manual J calculates what the house needs. Manual S selects equipment whose actual rated performance meets that need at your design conditions — including its latent capacity, which is the part that removes moisture. One produces the target; the other chooses the equipment to hit it.
- Does a load calculation matter for a straight replacement?
- It still matters, because the existing size may have been wrong and the house may have changed since. Windows, insulation, an added room or a sealed crawl space all shift the load. A calculation on the house as it stands prevents carrying an old mistake forward into new equipment.
