Air Quality & Ductwork
What Is Static Pressure?
Static pressure is the resistance a duct system presents to the air a blower is trying to move, measured in inches of water column. Total external static pressure is the standard diagnostic for whether a duct system is capable of carrying the airflow the equipment needs.
Also called: external static pressure · ESP · duct static
Why it matters to you
High static pressure is one of the most common and least visible causes of poor performance. The equipment can be the right size and correctly charged, yet still underperform because the ducts cannot move the air — and reduced airflow across the coil undermines moisture removal first.
What to do about it
Ask whether static pressure was measured during a service visit; it takes minutes and is far more informative than a visual duct inspection. Readings well above the equipment's design figure point to duct sizing, filter resistance or closed registers.
