Code, Permits & Ownership
What Is the NC Mechanical Code?
The North Carolina Mechanical Code is the volume of the state building code governing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and related systems. North Carolina adopts a model code with state amendments, and local inspection departments administer and enforce it within their jurisdictions.

Why it matters to you
It is why installation details that look like preference — venting arrangements, clearances, combustion air, equipment listings — are not negotiable. On the coast, floodplain and wind provisions administered alongside it can also affect how and where equipment is mounted.
What to do about it
Code editions are updated periodically and local amendments exist, so requirements should be confirmed with the authority having jurisdiction for your address rather than assumed from a general source — including this one.
