Code, Permits & Ownership
What Is a Mechanical Permit?
A mechanical permit is the authorisation a local inspections department issues before qualifying HVAC work begins, with inspection following to verify the installed work. Which jobs require one, and what is inspected, is set by the authority having jurisdiction for the property.
Also called: HVAC permit · building permit · permit
Why it matters to you
A permitted and inspected installation leaves a record that the work was examined against code — which matters at resale, can matter to insurers, and is the mechanism by which an installation error gets caught by someone other than the installer. Requirements differ between the counties and towns along the Crystal Coast.
What to do about it
Ask whether your job requires a permit and who is pulling it; a licensed contractor normally handles this. If a quote is materially cheaper than others, it is reasonable to ask whether permitting and inspection are included in it.
