What Is Variable-Speed (Inverter)?
A variable-speed or inverter-driven system varies its compressor and blower output continuously instead of switching between off and full power. It matches capacity to the load in small increments, so it runs for longer periods at lower output rather than cycling hard on and off.
Also called: inverter · variable capacity · modulating · inverter-driven
Why it matters to you
Long, low-output running is exactly what a humid coastal climate rewards: the longer the coil stays cold and air keeps moving across it, the more moisture leaves the house. A single-stage system reaching setpoint quickly and stopping removes far less humidity over the same afternoon.
What to do about it
Variable-speed equipment is less forgiving of poor duct design, because low-airflow operation depends on the duct system not fighting it. Ask whether static pressure was measured, and expect the system to run near-continuously in summer — that is correct behaviour, not a fault.
