What Is Storm-Season HVAC Prep?

Storm-season preparation for HVAC covers the steps taken before and after a tropical system: securing the outdoor unit, shutting off power ahead of flooding or surge, keeping the unit clear of debris, and having submerged or wind-damaged equipment inspected before it is restarted.

Also called: hurricane prep · storm prep · hurricane season prep

Why it matters to you

The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, and eastern North Carolina sits squarely in its path. The post-storm half matters most: equipment that has been submerged or taken debris can appear fine and still be unsafe to energise.

What to do about it

Switch the system off at the disconnect if flooding is expected — restoring power to a submerged unit is how damage becomes a hazard. After a storm, have any equipment that was underwater inspected before running it, whatever its outward condition.
