Ductless & Mini-Split
What Is a Multi-Zone System?
A multi-zone ductless system connects several indoor heads to a single outdoor unit, each head controlled separately. It contrasts with a single-zone system, where one outdoor unit serves one head, and lets several rooms be conditioned independently from shared outdoor equipment.
Also called: multi-zone · multi-head · multi-split
Why it matters to you
Multi-zone suits a coastal house where rooms are used unevenly — a guest wing, a sunroom or an upstairs that only needs conditioning part of the year. Zones that are off are not being conditioned, which is the practical advantage over one central system serving the whole footprint.
What to do about it
Because the outdoor unit is shared, its capacity is selected against the combined load; adding a head later is not always possible on an existing unit. If future zones are likely, say so at design time.
