Air Quality & Ductwork
What Is HEPA Filtration?
HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) describes filters meeting a defined capture efficiency at the most-penetrating particle size, conventionally 99.97% at 0.3 microns. It is a far stricter specification than any residential MERV rating, and the dense media it requires carries much higher airflow resistance than a standard furnace filter.
Also called: HEPA · HEPA filter · high-efficiency particulate air
Why it matters to you
Because of that resistance, true HEPA is generally not a drop-in filter for a residential air handler. It is delivered either as a portable room unit with its own fan or as a bypass system plumbed alongside the ductwork, rather than by swapping the filter in the return.
What to do about it
Be wary of products described as HEPA-type or HEPA-like, which are not held to the standard. If whole-house HEPA is the goal, ask specifically how it is integrated and what it does to system static pressure.
