What Is UV Germicidal Light?
A UV germicidal lamp installed in an air handler emits ultraviolet-C light, most commonly aimed at the evaporator coil and drain pan. Manufacturers position these systems primarily to keep the coil and pan surfaces clear of biological growth rather than as air treatment.
Also called: UV light · UVC · germicidal lamp · UV-C
Why it matters to you
The coil-and-pan application is the one that matters most in a humid coastal system, because those surfaces are wet for much of the year and are where growth actually establishes. A clean coil is also a coil that transfers heat properly.
What to do about it
Lamps lose output well before they stop glowing, so replacement is on a schedule rather than on failure — follow the manufacturer's interval. Never look directly at an energised UVC lamp, and have the system powered down before opening the cabinet.
