What Is a Gas Regulator?
A gas regulator reduces supply pressure to the level an appliance is designed to burn at and holds it steady as demand changes. Systems commonly have a regulator at the meter or propane tank and, where required, additional appliance-level regulation.
Also called: pressure regulator · gas pressure regulator
Why it matters to you
Propane and natural gas operate at different pressures, so the regulator is part of what makes an appliance fuel-specific. Correct pressure is also what produces correct combustion — pressure problems show up as burner and performance faults.
What to do about it
Regulator vents must stay clear and unobstructed; in coastal installations check that insects and debris have not blocked the vent. Adjustment and replacement are licensed work.
