What Is Propane vs Natural Gas?
Natural gas arrives by utility pipeline; propane (LP) is delivered and stored in an on-site tank. They carry different energy content per unit and burn at different pressures, so appliances are configured for one or the other and need a conversion kit and licensed adjustment to switch.
Also called: propane · LP gas · natural gas · liquefied petroleum
Why it matters to you
Parts of eastern North Carolina have no natural-gas main, which makes propane the practical fuel for gas appliances — and a tank the homeowner is responsible for siting. That changes what a gas piping job involves, and it is why fuel type belongs in the conversation early.
What to do about it
Never run an appliance on the fuel it was not configured for. If you are switching, conversion is licensed work involving orifices and pressure adjustment, and the appliance must be rated for conversion in the first place.
