What Is Gas Leak Detection?
Gas leak detection covers the methods used to find escaping fuel gas: electronic detectors, leak-detection solution on joints, and pressure testing of a piping system. Fuel gas is odourised with a sulphur compound specifically so leaks can be noticed by smell.
Also called: gas leak · leak test · pressure test
Why it matters to you
The smell is a deliberate safety feature and should always be treated as real. Gas leaks are both a fire risk and, through incomplete combustion, a carbon monoxide risk — which is why carbon monoxide alarms belong in any house with fuel-burning appliances.
What to do about it
If you smell gas, leave the building, do not operate switches or anything that could spark, and call your gas supplier or emergency services from outside. Finding and repairing the leak is licensed work — never test with a flame.
