What Is a Downflow Furnace?
A downflow furnace takes return air in at the top and discharges heated air downward, into ductwork beneath the floor. Manufactured homes commonly use this configuration because their duct systems typically run in the floor rather than in an attic or basement.
Also called: downflow · counterflow furnace
Why it matters to you
Airflow direction is not interchangeable. A furnace built for upflow cannot simply be installed in a downflow application, which is one of the main reasons manufactured-home replacements need equipment selected specifically for the home.
What to do about it
When replacing, confirm both the airflow configuration and the manufactured-home listing. Fitting the wrong configuration is not a tuning problem — it is an installation that will not work correctly or safely.
