What Is a Split System?

A split system places the compressor and condenser coil outdoors and the evaporator coil and blower indoors, connected by refrigerant lines. It is the standard residential arrangement and is distinct from a packaged unit, which houses every component in one outdoor cabinet, and from ductless equipment.

Why it matters to you

Because the two halves are rated as a matched pair, replacing only the outdoor unit and keeping an older indoor coil usually means the system never delivers its advertised efficiency. The AHRI certified rating applies to the specific combination, not the condenser on its own.

What to do about it

On any replacement quote, confirm both model numbers and check the matched pair in the AHRI Directory. If a quote replaces only one half, ask what rating the resulting combination actually carries.
