What Is an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV)?
An ERV brings in outdoor air and exhausts indoor air through a core that transfers both heat and a portion of the moisture between the two streams. Transferring moisture is what distinguishes it from an HRV, which exchanges heat only.
Also called: ERV · energy recovery ventilator
Why it matters to you
The moisture transfer is the reason ERVs suit this climate. In a humid coastal summer, incoming outdoor air carries a large moisture load; an ERV core sheds some of that to the outgoing stream before it reaches the house, so ventilation does not simply import humidity.
What to do about it
An ERV is a ventilation device, not a dehumidifier — it reduces the moisture penalty of ventilating rather than drying the house. Where latent load is the problem, it pairs with a dehumidifier rather than replacing one.
