What Is Loop Antifreeze?
Loop antifreeze is the water-based heat-transfer fluid circulating in a closed loop, mixed with an antifreeze such as propylene glycol or methanol to keep it liquid below freezing. Concentration is set so the fluid cannot freeze at the lowest loop temperature the system will reach.
Also called: loop fluid · heat transfer fluid · antifreeze solution
Why it matters to you
Concentration is a design decision, not a default: too little risks freezing at the heat exchanger, while too much thickens the fluid and makes the circulating pump work harder. In a mild coastal climate loop temperatures stay comparatively moderate, which feeds into what concentration is appropriate.
What to do about it
Loop fluid is checked rather than routinely changed — pressure and freeze protection are verified at service, and fluid is only topped up if there is a loss, which itself indicates a leak worth finding.
