What Is a Horizontal Loop Field?
A horizontal loop field buries loop pipe in trenches a few feet deep spread across an area of land, rather than in deep vertical boreholes. It trades land area for drilling depth, and is generally the lower-cost configuration where enough open ground is available.
Also called: horizontal loop · loop field · horizontal ground loop
Why it matters to you
Horizontal fields suit properties with open land, which is more often available on larger lots inland of the waterfront than on a tight coastal parcel. Shallower pipe sits in soil with more seasonal temperature variation than deep bores see, so the field is sized with that in mind.
What to do about it
Plan around the field permanently: it rules out future building, deep planting and anything requiring excavation over that ground. Keep the as-built drawing with your house records.
