What Is EER2?

EER2 (Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures cooling efficiency at a single hot design condition — 95°F outdoors — rather than averaged across a season. It is cooling output in BTU/h divided by electrical input in watts at that one operating point, so it describes how a system behaves on the hottest afternoons.

Also called: Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 · EER

Why it matters to you

EER2 is a useful number on the Crystal Coast because it describes peak-heat performance, but it is not a legal minimum here: DOE sets EER2 floors for the Southwest region only — Arizona, California, Nevada and New Mexico — not the Southeast. Treat it as a comparison tool between quotes, not as a compliance threshold your installer must hit.

What to do about it

If two systems have the same SEER2 but different EER2, the higher-EER2 one generally holds up better in sustained high heat and humidity. Ask for both figures from the AHRI-matched listing rather than the marketing sheet.

Common questions

Is there an EER2 minimum in North Carolina?
No. The DOE regional standards that set EER2 minimums apply to the Southwest region, where dry extreme heat makes peak performance the binding constraint. North Carolina is in the Southeast region, which has a SEER2 minimum but no EER2 minimum. EER2 is still published for certified equipment and is still useful for comparing systems.
Why does EER2 matter if it isn't required here?
Because a seasonal average can hide weak peak behaviour. SEER2 blends mild and hot hours together; EER2 isolates the 95°F condition. In a humid coastal summer, the hours when the system is working hardest are the hours that determine whether the house actually stays comfortable, so the single-point number carries real information.
How do EER2 and SEER2 relate?
They measure the same thing — cooling delivered per unit of electricity — at different conditions. EER2 is a single rated point at 95°F; SEER2 is a weighted seasonal figure. EER2 is always the lower number for the same equipment. They are not interchangeable, and you cannot convert one to the other reliably.
